Talking to Girls About Duran Duran: One Young Man’s Quest for True Love and a Cooler Haircut

A terrific new book will be coming out on July 15th, Talking to Girls About Duran Duran: One Young Man’s Quest for True Love and a Cooler Haircut . An unabashed Duran Duran fan, Rob Sheffield has decided to play tribute to one of his musical heroes by sharing stories of how they aided him while growing up growing up and learning all about girls. Publisher’s Weekly says “…(in this) tuneful coming-of-age memoir, the glamorous New Wave band Duran Duran presides spiritually over the all-consuming teenage male efforts to comprehend the opposite sex….The result is a funny, poignant browse from a wonderful pop-culture evocateur.”

” “Talking to girls about Duran Duran” is how I’ve spent my whole life! It always amazes me how huge this band is, and how much loyalty and ferocity they inspire in their listeners. They taught me a lot about music I never would have heard if not for them–stuff like Kraftwerk and Visage, Chic and Roxy Music. I remember watching MTV one night in 1983 when Simon and Nick were doing a guest VJ spot, for the world premiere of the “Save a Prayer” video. Simon and Nick were playing all these obscure videos by brilliant artists I’d never heard of, stuff that MTV normally would never play. I’ll never forget that night.
Like so many other American kids, I had my whole idea of music altered by Duran Duran. Simon’s whole sense of wit and wordplay was way ahead of what my other favorite bands were doing at the time, along with the whole idea of blending punk and funk, which would’ve been unheard of for any American band.
So I guess this book is my small attempt to pay homage to their massive presence in music and in pop culture over the years. We all owe them a lot. ”

Birthday Message from John!

Hello!
Thank you all so much for so many wonderful and touching birthday wishes.I have never felt so grateful as I have today to be who I am, a proud member of the human race (dues paid) and a member of Duran Duran (ditto.)
It has been an extraordinary year in so many ways, darkness and light in (almost) equal measure, but it has all been good, in its way, made so because of the amazing friends + family I have. Oh yes, and the other ‘f’s… You, the fans, for so many years- giving me permission to be myself (still no day job!)
I am VERY excited about our new album, but more about that soon come… In the meantime, have a great June 20, and remember, ‘All You Need is NOW’!!…-JT x

A Birthday Message from Nick

I suppose being born on December 31st or January 1st makes the most practical sense, then one can start each new year of life in sync with the international calendar, but then being born on a date significant for reasons other than your personal entrance to the world can be rather frustrating too… So easy for people to forget, or become preoccupied with holiday hyperbole, it is thoroughly tiresome to have to share the day with selfish people recovering from hangovers unrelated to the celebration of your existence, also rather dissatisfying that one’s limelight can be so easily overshadowed by a clock striking twelve times in succession. These annual dates are equally troubling for those born on holidays created by Hallmark cards and their cunning accomplices, who mercilessly relieve you of hard earned cash, in exchange for an essential cardboard greeting to your closest companion on February 14th, or Mother’s Day, or Father’s Day, or any number of increasingly more obscure annual festive opportunities.
So, just as I was beginning to feel rather smug about having my birthday so promptly each year on the pure untainted date of June 8th, I thought I should check to make sure it was indeed alternative celebration free… I am already starting to wish I hadn’t pursued this route, which was clearly destined for heartbreak, but feel in the interest of full disclosure, I have absolutely no choice but to reveal to you those with whom I am now inextricably linked and will henceforth share my birthday celebrations forevermore on this day. I’m sure you will be sympathetic to my anxiety based upon the following facts.

Duran Duran Roundtable

In March, we asked the readers of Duranduran.com to send in some questions via Ask Katy to pose to the band for a “Roundtable” session we were planning to do. Unfortunately John wasn’t able to participate, but Nick, Roger and Simon were game!
We received so many questions, it was hard to narrow them down, but we tried to choose the ones that we thought would be of the most interest to every person who decides to listen.

Duran Duran are making a quick trip to Moscow to perform at the Fashion for Relief and The Garage CCC Fundraiser Event. This high profile event celebrates art, fashion and design while raising funds to support those in need.
While visiting Russia, Nick and John did a little sight seeing…

Birthday Message from Roger
April 26th, 2010
“The secret to staying young is to live honestly, eat slowly and lie about your age.”
…so said the great and late actress Lucille Ball…well I think I live fairly honestly, but I eat fast, and being an original member of Duran Duran I cannot (thanks to the wonderful wikipedia) lie about my age so…it’s the time to embrace a new half century, which incidently, in cricketing terms, is definetly only half way to glory!
When I was younger my favourite James Dean quotation was ‘Dream as if you will live forever…live as if you will die today.’ Pretty cool to follow when you are 21, but today I will leave you with this one from the 19th century American poet Lucy Larcom: ‘Whatever with the past has gone, the best is always yet to come’!
Many many thanks for all the kind messages, cards and gifts that have come over the last week or so.

Roger DJs Fate Awards in Belfast!
March 28th, 2010
Now in its fourth year, Belfast’s FATE AWARDS was hosted by Christopher Biggins with assistance by former Miss Great Britain and Fate Awards Media Personality nominee Gemma Garrett.
Duran Duran legendary drummer Roger Taylor made his Irish DJing debut at the aftershow party. With him was Eamonn Holmes and his partner Ruth Langsford, who was joined by her ‘Loose Women’ friends Denise Welsch and Carol McGiffin.
Award categories for the Fate Awards 2010 included Best Classic Bar, Best Style Bar, Best Cocktail Bar, Best Gastro Pub, Best Front of House, Best Chef, Best Restaurant, Best Regional Bar, Best Regional Restaurant, Best Club, Best Regional Club, Best DJ, Best Gay Venue, Jim Aiken Live Venue, Colin Angus Best Media Personality, Best Hotel and Best Newcomer.
The Fate Awards in association with Diet Coke, was held on 26th March 2010 in Belfast’s Europa Hotel and proudly supported by Peroni, BMI, Bacardi Brown-Forman, Tigi and UTV.

Duran Duran to Headline at the GSMA’s Mobile World Congress Awards Party

Writer and actor Stephen Fry to host Global Mobile Awards 2010 in Barcelona
The GSMA, which represents the interests of the worldwide mobile communications industry, today announced that Duran Duran, one of the world’s most successful rock bands, will headline the Congress Party & Awards Celebration on Tuesday 16 February 2010 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Writer, actor and self-confessed technophile, Stephen Fry, will host and present the awards, which have taken on a new two-part format, comprising an afternoon awards presentation as well as the evening celebration party.
Honouring excellence and innovation in mobile communications worldwide, the mobile industry’s leading annual awards include categories for Mobile Entertainment, Marketing & Advertising, Mobile Services, Innovation and Technology, as well as the Green Mobile Awards and Best Mobile Contribution to Social & Economic Development. The Global Mobile Awards presentation will take place in the afternoon on Tuesday 16th February in the main conference auditorium at the Congress.
At the official Congress Party & Awards Celebration at the National Palace in Barcelona later the same evening, three high-profile awards for the year will be presented, including Best Mobile Handset, the GSMA Chairman’s Award and Mobile Industry Personality of the Year. The evening event will also be hosted by Stephen Fry and will culminate with a headline performance by Duran Duran.
Duran Duran are currently finalising their 13th studio album, produced by Mark Ronson, for release in early 2010. Over the last thirty years the band have topped the charts around the world, with 18 American hit singles and 30 in the UK. With a global presence that guarantees them huge concert audiences on five continents, they have sold more 100 million records worldwide. The band’s keyboard player and founding member, Nick Rhodes, will also be interviewed as part of the Mobile Entertainment keynote session in the conference programme at the Mobile World Congress on Wednesday 17 February 2010.
The afternoon awards presentation is open to all Mobile World Congress conference delegates, award nominees and all accredited press attending the event. Tickets for the evening celebration party are on sale now at the online registration point for the Mobile World Congress, which you can access via www.mobileworldcongress.com/registration/registration.htm.
