ROCK N ROLL SUICIDE
Current mood: artistic
Category: Music
ANDY'S NEW BLOG NOV 07...
There are times when you know exactly what you want to say - but you just can't figure out where or whom to start with & then - boom - it finds you...
Universal Music CEO/supervillain Doug Morris Speaks... Recording Industry in Even Deeper Shit Than We Thought...
Hold on... Even the mob admit it now!!!
In a recent article, when Morris is asked why the music business didn't work harder, in the early days of file-sharing, to build its own (legal) online presence, there's this exchange:
"There's no one in the record industry that's a technologist," Morris explains. "That's a misconception writers make all the time, that the record industry missed this. They didn't. They just didn't know what to do. It's like if you were suddenly asked to operate on your dog to remove his kidney. What would you do?"
Well... Personally, I would hire a vet. But to Morris, even that wasn't an option.
"We didn't know who to hire," he says, becoming agitated. "I wouldn't be able to recognise a good technology person — anyone with a good bullshit story would have gotten past me."
Oh dear kids, the futures in his hands... Incidentally, many of us in the music industry are techno friendly... Take a look a the bloody gear we use Doug... its ALL technology...
The reason I refer to Doug Morris is that - 20-years ago he was the guy who gave me my 1st solo deal, with a track called "Take it Easy"... Doug paved the way for me to leave Duran Duran in 1986 - he was on the cutting edge of everything & destined to run the cartel... Oh & then I met Irving, but that's another tale...
The writer goes on further to say...
In a way, he almost comes off as cute, like if your grandfather were accidentally hired to run Google"...
That's just a killer line...
Even though we shouldn't be, we're actually a little shocked. We'd always assumed the labels had met with a team of technology experts in the late nineties and ignored their advice, but it turns out they never even got that far — they didn't even try! Understanding the Internet certainly isn't easy — especially for an industry run by a bunch of technology-averse sexagenarians — but it's definitely not impossible.
Some 20-years on, and without a label, (albeit as a consequence of distinctly different circumstances) - I was faced with somewhat of a similar choice - "CEO/supervillain Dougs way" or the "Information-Super Highway"...
Follow those old buggers into CD oblivion - Sell a million & not make a livin'... utter madness & Iam not quite ready for friggin' Starbucks deal yet (perhaps there's a new Canadian version that sells pot brownies) but otherwise - ughh... Ide rather watch back to back series 1 of Weeds & act it out...
I mean, what does it take to sell a fuckin CD today - donate one of your bollocks for reality TV... If I had 3 - I betchya somebody would suggest it (yeah I know you only need 1 but somehow I prefer the full 2...)
The music business has always been full of villains, dark arts & skulduggery - its a close second to politics, far more corrupt than the movie or TV business - indeed widely practised "old school' management skills, that got you & your acts to the top, often employed a "filthy bag of despicable tricks" and from the labels point money was no object, as long as their paws weren't on the DNA sample...
Radio - Records sales - MTV = Bottoms on seats... there were riches in the system - riches worth mauling the opponents for & the artist stood casually by, generally benign to the actuality or high as a kite - usually both...
And yes I had a huge life because of this madness - & no shame there either because its the songs stuck & not the muck... Currently there are an awful lot of dudes scratching their hair implants wondering which record label they can bill next for the 300k commission on the radio airplay deal...
Now in this time & space, most of the artists I work with will never see 1-million CD units sold in the UK or USA & if they do, the cartel will steal all their money in recoupable costs (well somebody gotta pay for the corruption still)...
Fortunately however, the younger class are the ones who understand how the internet works, a high school hacker probably has more collective knowledge than the entire board of the French water company that owns Doug's boys... (or used to - its so hard to keep up with this shit)
There's positively tons of great music out there because of the technology, its what keeps me optimistic and functioning - And now daft old Doug and the boys can't hold it in reserve any more - YES... even at my age the freedom of choice is exciting, and the fact that most of us on the planet are now officially smarter then Doug Morris is good to know...
And although artists are a strange mixture of tortured souls & greedy bastards - in the end we would all only want for one thing - & that is the opportunity to express the feeling, to make the groove, slam the rifff - sing the bloody chorus - wear the clothes & make-up - if its good, the riches will find you.
There just may not be as much cash for the private jet, unless its the one taking you to reality, celebrity-rehab - "Yee-Haa.. Gas up the Lisa Marie and lets go Elvis baby"
I don't care what ever the chattering crass may say - because it is still ALL about the music, & so much more now that the cartel has lost its grip & control - even the so called "clever stunts" bear no fruit these days because we live in a world where the "bawling Britney fan" gets more attention and views than the super-groups that once dominated our TV time -
"However - if you have a great song I would still bet the farm on it"... "But fellas make sure its a great song"...
Anyway... the time in my bunker has been spent almost exclusively creatively - the fruits of which are now on the studio pages - which weve started to re-vamp - adding the 6-song player to each page.
And I truly hope that the creative motivation is being passed down, because there's so much to aspire to if you are a young player or writer, but it just isn't gonna happen in the same way as it used to...
There are so many more "ears & eyes" - "listening & watching" & riches beyond compare in terms of subject matter - all of which one can freely investigate & regurgitate as your art, but for sure, the roadmap to the stars is being re-written - so get a copy of the new one fast...
A few old timers can't kill or control the greatest but one, sensual feeling known to man...
Rock n Roll Suicide... Call a vet, I can hear an old Dinosaur in pain...
Andy Taylor - nice to be back on the attack - Nov. 07... |

Er schaut WEEDS!!
Kennt jemand die Serie? - Total klasse!
Ein paar sehr nette und dezente Hinweise auf alte Rock-Giganten.
So etwas zu lesen, muss Balsam auf für die Mühlen Seele von Ani DiFranco sein. |

ROCK N ROLL SUICIDE - AUTOPSY
Current mood: amused
I found it truly enlightening & somewhat staggering that the audience, that's yourselves... appear to understand more about the digital music world than the guys on the thrones of the record companies...
So Ive created a new blog which includes some of your comments & insight & a few responses from my perspective...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by Lora on Wednesday, November 28, 2007 at 4:07 PM
Good blog. It seems the record industry is going through the same thing as my industry, space flight. No one is willing to let go of the past and the individuals are going to kick our ass.
It seems the music industry and the space industry are facing the same situation where they are a mature industry that needs to find a way to reinvent themselves in order to succeed. However, they are sticking their heads in the sand thinking the old way of doing business is the way to go. Not so.
A.T. SAYS... Great analogy - a lot of space & defence technology - solid state & digital - ends up in our music equipment, so on the one hand Ive always been grateful for the expansive research the "defence" industry has done - War Games Technology is what we use on massive music files doing gazzillions of sums per second - one of the best audio software companies & most advanced is Israeli - basically between the USA (Mac & Manley ) - UK (SSL) - & Israel (Waves) you can find everything you need for the modern day recording session - Irony... The microphones still favoured by most producers - are derived from pre-war German technology - Neumann CMV3 still in production...
Again & ironically, such businesses like music & space, who rely solely on technology to advance - seem to have reverse mentality when it comes to the commercial effect on their actual business - Mistakenly attempting to lock things up with legislation & government protection - who's gonna invest in the future of "thinkers"
But basically, you right the rest of the world has been flying digital for some time now however the cartel who used to run our business still think that digital comes in the form of Casio wrist ware - sadly these guys are still adjusting to digits as opposed to hands on a watch!!!
Techno tip - Microphone Channel Path... Neumann U87 - Manley Slam - Pultec eq - Digi Design Interface - Waves SSL e-channel - Mac G-5 with pro tools - Speakers (BIG)...

The problem with music today Andy is that it's not real. I mean, besides the technology that can reconfigure even my voice to sound good, music is TOO deeply rooted in synths and computer generated effects. How many of the mainstream bands/singers out there could really go on a stage and perform without it? If most of these singers had to actually sing LIVE... their fans would boo them off the stage.
A.T. SAYS... Get rid of the synths - best advice I can give!!!

And you have now found the exact moment to back to speak and to make light on who prefers to stay to the dark as a fool, you know what I mean and who stupid is not too!!
Thanks thousand to be always so sincere and true, this is what I love in you that it has also come out always in your music that doesn't have chains and when you have had to bear them you have known it to break.
A.T. SAYS... There are two things I worship - Music & Sun - Rhythm & Light - Sound & Vision... Most songs are written in the light of the day however the inspiration is often from the darkness that precedes this & the chains bit... I got the keys back...

That's a great post, very inspirational and gives pause to be reflective. I think your right about getting a new roadmap for success…. Hopefully the entertainment industry will only be a stepping stone for a new tomorrow. I still think we are a long way off from a "better tomorrow" maybe so far off we end up gone before tomorrow has a chance but I am enjoying actually being able to see a change take place, a change that is forcing itself into how music will be offered in the future.
A.T. SAYS... I guess the promise of a better tomorrow was all they had to offer (sell us) but now you can either, suffer the decaying establishments version or create your very own - it was only the physical control & spin of the media that held the line - we were literally spoon fed cradle to grave, with limited options - now Google can let you decide & currently you are free to draw your own map...

i worked for polygram for 8 years until around 94 and then sony music europe until i moved to ibiza in 99 - you would not believe (probably can) the amount of conversations i had about mp3, the internet etc
one day i got hauled into personell about a post i had put on the nme.com message board (around '96/7)
"where did you get the information from?"
"it was on the newsgroup"
"whats a newsgroup?"
at sony i became the unofficial tech support for the net (no-one had a clue) even though i was working for europe - yet when they advertised an internal job for sme in their "newly created 'new media division'" i didnt even get an internal informal interview - after resigning(and it not being accepted): i finally got an answer "sorry we thought you'd be bored after 6 months"
i have absolutely no sympathy for the majors for burying their heads in the sand for so long
A.T. SAYS... At least Doug now admits he didn't know who to hire & your experience bears testament to this cabal of illiteracy... What I find amazing is that ALL music production is technology led - always has been & always will (Dougs surely old enuff to remember that Sgt Peppers was a tecno break-thru' in 1967)... The truly bizarre statement about there being no techo guys in the business is just the typical-staged line from a slippery, out of his depth - redundant old man - as I said we are all now officially smarter than Doug Morris, the most powerful man in the music business - that was...

I know it must be difficult but you are NOT a shy man...haha. I know how hard it is...but you have the means. Write a book, start a seminar series and use the content of this blog as an outline. Write a documentary about the change and say everything you just said in here - be the Michael Moore of the music business. Change things up. Just trying to be the best friend I can be here and throw out some ideas. Just one flicker of light can trigger things. I think the documentary idea would be fantastic. See then you could start doing the interviews with everyone and be in charge of the whole thing. Alright..Love you and take good care now. To be able to write to you like this means more to me than you will ever know.
A.T. SAYS... I guess I am a Mike Moore fan - his new movie, SICKO, is quite shocking as the perspective based on folks with insurance - so on that basis I can get very MM - health insurance seems the same as having a record deal these days - not worth the paper its written on unless there's a lawyer in da' house...

But we're getting back to the point where it's all about the music, and that, is one hell of a beautiful thing. It's inspiring to see today's kids talking about bands they've discovered on the internet. These aren't bands the record labels are shoving down our throats, but honest-to-god artists who just want to get their music out there and are doing that very thing.
AT SAYS... Oh believe me - if Doug could control the internet music scene he would chop off at least one of his bollocks, or maybe he's only got one left anyway - but the undeniable reality is that he can't control it anymore & is effectively useless - however we should give him some credit for his stupidity, its because of this - in not implementing some form of "friendly to the consumer" solution that created the debacle he/we now find ourselves in - silly bugger pooped on his own doorstep & Larrs wiped his bottom clean...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rock And Roll Suicide would make a great song/album title actually!
A.T. SAYS... And you're the reason why I posted the David Bowie lyrics - checkout the song (although I get the feeling you already knew this)...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by Kage Alan on Tuesday, November 27, 2007 at 9:17 AM
The truth is that if someone plays a song for me and I feel it the way one does a terrific song, I'll go out of my way to own the legitimate CD. Still, I wouldn't mind getting paid the salary of those in charge who are so archaic in their decisions.
A.T. SAYS... Big Salary - No Legacy...

I must say, I can't help but find it amusing everytime I read an interview about the decline of the music industry, especially from a spokesperson for the labels. There seem to be dozens of eggs flying around, judging by the amount of them on the music industry's face and Lars Ulrich of Metallica should be nicknamed Eggs Benedict. Sueing your fans isn't such a great idea afterall, eh Lars? Also, I wonder if it ever occured to Lars that beginning a witch hunt to publically capture and kill Napster would only serve as a way for every tom dick and harry to visit it's site and download the software? They should have tried to under publicise it. It would have been a band-aid solution, but it could have bought them time to figure out what to do or to hire that "technology person".
A.T. SAYS... Suing your fans is like legally divorcing your parents - how the fuck did you get here Larrs baby... Then again those Arctic Monkeys keep using DD bits in their songs - and I bet its his mums fault & she's probably a fan - but I believe its called flattery

Great read Andy, I think like most who've already commented I've missed your particular blend of wit and straight-shooting. It's good to see you back.
Now... if my local Starbucks would just get on those pot brownies...
A.T. SAYS... Go to British Columbia - they have a whole fuckin island devoted to it, great baking department I believe!!!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And now you have great artists who can't get signed. Or great artists who make a cd that doesn't sell as well and they get dropped. All of these artists should unite and just fuckin' start their own label and market it on their own!!!!
A.T. SAYS... The one thing artists need to start doing is thinking for themselves - that way, the natural process of selection would then get rid of at least 90% of the duffers, and I would make Rhiana fill out a form, all on her own, and them if she can get that far maybe we would keep her...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by reverend on Tuesday, November 27, 2007 at 4:13 PM
then they technology excuse is also classic. remember when after millions of dollars were spent these buffons proclaimed an end to piracy ( insert black pot and kettle joke here) because they had encrypted new cd's with a copy protection layer only to be outdone by a 2 dollar magic marker and a steady hand? classic!
A.T. SAYS... As I have already said - its always been about technology and while Dopey Doug was fiddling with his magic marker malarkey - kids were rippin up beats, programming 96 tracks of midi - 96 track of audio and hacking whatever they choose to - fundamentally these guys can't convert from Dictator to Debater as I said its their way or the information super highway... look who winning... You
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks for all the comment, insight & commendation
